Kenya on Our Minds

“Ella isn’t telling the truth!  She hasn’t ridden on the roof of a car and chased zebras.”  Boy in Ella’s playschool

Indeed Ella has.  It has been fun to hear our kids share this and other adventures with their friends.  We did not know how they would respond to being in Canada and we are glad that, even though they have had a wonderful time in Canada, they are just as excited as we are about returning to Kenya in August.

The plan is to be in Stettler until the end of June.  We will then drive to Vancouver for Todd’s sister’s wedding on July 2nd.  We plan on spending much of July in British Columbia and then returning to Stettler for the first week of August so we can pack up.  We would like to book our tickets for the second week of August.

So far Todd will be returning to the same responsibilities – physical education department head, PE teacher, Canadian Studies teacher, and varsity volleyball coach.  Kylie’s responsibilities for next year are still up in the air but we know that an assignment is coming.

There will be a big reshuffling of administration at the school when we return as we will have a new superintendent, high school principal, and dean of men.  Please pray for smooth transitions.  We have been so blessed with amazing leaders and we are trusting God for the future.

Squeezing It All Into One Year

“How are we supposed to get our science fair project done when you are traveling every weekend?!” Cassidy’s best friend

True – true – we are traveling almost every weekend.  It is a nice feeling to be all together in the mini-van heading somewhere – the kids find it kind of boring when we have a weekend at home.  We are thankful for kids that love to travel and for all of the wonderful family and friends that we have been able to see and new people that we have been able to meet.  God has overflowed our hearts with the blessing of wonderful relationships.  Thank you to everyone for your hospitality and listening ear as we talk about Kenya, Africa, and the joy we get out of walking with God.

When we are not traveling we have enjoyed attending church at Stettler Baptist.  We recently began hosting a Bible Study at our home and have enjoyed the discussions very much.  Kylie has also been attending a ladies Bible Study in Stettler and enjoys taking Ella to the library for reading and exercise programs.  Ella attends play school twice a week and enjoys play dates on the other days with friends in town.  Todd has received many subbing hours in the high school and has been helping out family and friends with small home projects.  He is also enjoying playing volleyball on a community team.  Cassidy is in grade five and has joined all of the clubs at school that she can – cup stacking, running, science, speech, drama, etc.  She is also in ballet lessons once a week and is looking forward to competitions in the spring.  Titus is in grade two and has been finding a lot of success with the hands on teaching methods at the public school here.  He is ice skating twice a week and has become very interested in collecting hockey cards and coins.

We have set a tentative itinerary for the next few months.  We are discovering that our time will be very interesting to manage with the kids ballet and rugby events and seeing supporters.  We are hopeful that we will be able to get to all of the places we can in the next few weeks.

Crunching Numbers

Working at Rift Valley Academy in Kenya has been a big step for us as far as finances go.  We live entirely on financial support from people here in Canada.  This allows tuition at RVA to remain low for missionary families.  Right now we only have 80% of our required financial support.  Would you consider partnering with us financially? It would be a four year commitment of any amount you choose per month.  It could be automatically debited from your account and is tax receipted.  All funds go through Africa Inland Mission.  It is important to have 100% committed soon so that we can purchase our return tickets for the beginning of August.  If one time gifts work better, please consider designating a one time gift to our vehicle fund.  Having a vehicle in Kenya would make a huge difference for us.

We also need strong prayer support.  If you are interested in praying for us we would love to know.  We are committed to praying that God will provide for all of our needs and we have seen God work in amazing ways.  Joining us in this area would be just as big a blessing as giving money.  Pray that God will give us direction and that He will provide from His infinite riches for us to continue our work at Rift Valley Academy.  He really does own the cattle on a thousand hills – it is not hard for Him to provide.

If you would like to support us financially – here are the options:

  1. e-mail Sharon at Africa Inland Mission at financeassist.can@aimint.net– Let her know that you would like to support Todd and Kylie Dubber and how much per month.  They will be able to help you out with the method that works best for you.
  2. call Africa Inland Mission at 1-877-407-6077 – Let them know that you would like to support Todd and Kylie Dubber and how much per month.  They will be able to help you out with the method that works best for you.
  3. websitefollow the link to AIM Canada in the sidebar to the right to either make a credit card contribution, print off a financial pledge form (below), or contact AIM through their website about your intention to support us.

Thank you very much for considering this.

You know you are Canadian when …

… zero degrees is considered a heat wave.  Wow, the last week has produced some major environmental mood swings.  First we were so excited when the daytime temperature finally got above zero.  It was glorious.  Then in the matter of 24 hours the temperature plummeted about forty degrees.  We woke to a completely unexpected mindnumbing cold.  Then a couple of days later we hit a plus seven degree high.  Will spring come or not?  The groundhog did not see its shadow during a “snowcopolase” in eastern North America.  We are so hoping that the tons of snow has a short life.

We have been traveling many miles in the past weeks.  Our times with supporters and churches has been so good.  We have been blessed to know people in many different places.  We are hoping that we will be fully supported by the time July comes so that we can focus on returning.  We will be attending Mission Fest in Edmonton and then attending the mission conference held by the Lethbridge E Free church.   We have so many people that we want to see and hope to be able to make time for everyone.  We are definitely sensing the time slipping fast as we are past the midway point of our time here in Canada.

Please be praying for safety in our travels and clarity in our presentations.  We believe that God will provide for us with both faithful prayer and financial supporters.

Christmas in Canada

It was a white Christmas for sure this year.  We had a great time visiting with family.  Todd’s parents and sister came and spent Christmas with us in Stettler.  We rode the steam train and saw real reindeer.  Then we were off to Bentley to camp out with the Stenstroms with twelve of us staying in the house.  We also threw in a quick pack up of the Stenstrom house to help them move on to Three Hills.  So far it has not been a dull time.  New Years found us at Kylie’s sisters house shooting off roman candles just holding them in our hands and then setting off a large firework display that had the kids both in awe and in fright.  Definitely a fun time.   We kicked off the new year with a sense of determination to really try develop relationships here that are long lasting.  Hopefully we will not just be guilty of sitting around this year but that we have worked hard at helping the local church become deeper and stronger in its faith.

Who turned the thermostat down?

Ok, enough already. We give up. We know that it can get cold but this is ridiculus. Eight inches of snow and -30 degree weather. The kids are wondering why they cannot just run outside and play like they are used to. Getting the snow suits on are a major undertaking and involve a few tears right now. Maybe we will get acclimatized but right now we do not feel like it.
